The terms, in plain English.
What Heel is, what it isn't, what we promise, and the legalese that comes with running a service. Written to be readable.
These terms cover what Heel is, what it isn't, what we promise, and the (mostly boring) legalese that comes with running a service. They're written to be readable; if any of it is genuinely unclear, write to us.
1. Agreement
By creating a Heel account or using the Heel service, you agree to these terms. If you don't agree, don't use the service. If you're using Heel on behalf of an organization (a vet practice, a multi-pet household, etc.), you confirm you have authority to bind that organization to these terms.
2. What Heel is
Heel is a software tool that helps pet owners track vet expenses, reconcile insurer reimbursements, and maintain a ledger of pet-related financial and health data. Heel reads receipts and explanation-of-benefits documents you provide and presents the data in a structured form.
What Heel is not:
- Heel is not an insurance company, broker, or agent. We don't sell, underwrite, or recommend insurance products.
- Heel is not a financial advisor or accountant. Information presented in the app is informational, not advice.
- Heel is not a veterinary service. We display data from your vet but don't substitute for medical care.
- Heel is not a tax preparer. We help organize your data for tax purposes but do not file your taxes or guarantee deductibility.
3. Beta service
Heel is currently in beta. This means:
- Features may change, be added, or be removed without long notice.
- Auto-reading and reimbursement calculations are best-effort and may contain errors. Always verify before relying on any number for a financial decision.
- Service availability is not guaranteed; we aim for 99.9% uptime but don't formally promise it during beta.
- The free beta plan is currently capped at 25 auto-reads per month. Uploads remain unlimited regardless of plan.
4. Your account
You're responsible for keeping your password secret and your account secure. Don't share your account credentials. If you suspect unauthorized access, change your password and notify us immediately.
You can have one account per person. Multi-pet households can share an account, but each individual user should sign in with their own credentials when family sharing ships.
You must be at least 13 to use Heel. If you're under 18, you should have a parent's permission.
5. Payment & subscriptions
The beta plan is free. The Unlimited plan is a recurring subscription, billed monthly through Stripe. Prices are listed on the pricing page and may change with at least 30 days' notice to existing subscribers.
Subscriptions auto-renew until you cancel. Canceling stops the next charge; existing prepaid time is not refunded but you keep your Unlimited features until that period ends. Refunds for the current period are available if you've had a genuinely bad experience — write to us and we'll be reasonable.
6. Your content
The receipts, EOBs, pet information, and other content you upload to Heel are yours. You retain all ownership and intellectual property rights in your content.
You grant Heel a limited license to store, process, transmit, and display your content solely to operate the service for you. This license ends when you delete the content or your account.
We do not use your content to train AI models. We do not share or sell your content to third parties. See the privacy policy for details.
7. Acceptable use
Use Heel for its intended purpose — tracking pet expenses. Don't:
- Upload content that isn't yours or that you don't have permission to upload.
- Use Heel to commit insurance fraud or any other unlawful act.
- Attempt to access other users' accounts or data.
- Reverse-engineer, scrape, or otherwise abuse the service.
- Use Heel to harass, abuse, or harm anyone.
We may suspend or terminate accounts that violate these terms, generally after one warning.
8. No warranties
Heel is provided “as is” without warranty of any kind. The auto-read accuracy, the reimbursement math, and the matching logic are all best-effort; we do not guarantee they're correct in every case. Always verify amounts before making financial decisions.
9. Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, Heel's total liability for any claim arising from your use of the service is capped at the amount you paid us in the 12 months preceding the claim, or $50, whichever is greater. We are not liable for indirect, consequential, or punitive damages.
Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law.
10. Indemnity
You agree to indemnify and hold Heel harmless from claims arising from your misuse of the service, your violation of these terms, or your violation of someone else's rights.
11. Termination
You can stop using Heel at any time by deleting your account. We can terminate or suspend your account if you violate these terms, after notice and reasonable opportunity to cure where appropriate. Mutual termination obligations (paying outstanding amounts, returning confidential data) survive.
12. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms occasionally. Material changes will be announced by email at least 30 days before they take effect. Continued use after the effective date constitutes acceptance.
13. Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of California, USA, excluding its conflict-of-laws rules. Any dispute will be resolved exclusively in the state or federal courts located in Alameda County, California, except that small-claims actions may be brought in your local jurisdiction.
14. The whole agreement
These terms, together with the privacy policy, constitute the entire agreement between you and Heel regarding the service. If any provision is found unenforceable, the remainder remains in effect.
